12 Players with MLGT Experience, Including Sunny Kim, Alan Morin, and Minor League Golf Tour Q-School Contest Winner Justin Peters
Advance to Finals at Bear Lakes

Justin Peters, Sunny Kim, Alan Morin, Nick Malinowski, Nathan Smith and Ted Brown have all won on the MLGT
November 21, 2009

JUPITER, Fla. – Q-School Contest 2 winner Justin Peters, who is number 1 in career wins (26) and number 2 in career earnings ($49,312) on The Minor League Golf Tour, finished fourth at the second stage of PGA Tour Qualifying in Panama City Beach, Florida.

His final round 67, highlighted by a hole-in-one on the par-3 eleventh hole (a 1-hop 8-Iron), combined with opening rounds of 68-67-72 ensured that he will advance to the final stage of PGA Tour Qualifying School next month at Bear Lakes Country Club in West Palm Beach.

Before Peters teed off in his final round he realized that an even par round of 72 would most likely be good enough to get him into the final stage, but pushed that though out of his mind.  "I kept telling myself that this is just like a Minor League Golf Tour event where I have to shoot 4-under par to make some grocery money."
His caddie, James Middleton, who occasionally plays the MLGT,

Justin Peters

was in on the plan and after turning at 2-under par, kept Peters focused on earning some MLGT grocery money.

Sunny Kim

Peters will be joined by four time MLGT winner Sunny Kim.

Sunny, who is 6th on the 2009 MLGT money list and 13th in MLGT career earnings ($26,976) turned professional three years ago at the age of 17.

Everyone who plays on The Minor League Golf Tour knows who he is; now this young star will shine on a bigger stage.
Alan Morin, a PGA Professional from the Falls Country Club in Lake Worth, has 5 MLGT victories, including a 62 at Martin Downs for his first MLGT win.  Since 1998 Morin has qualified for 16 PGA Tour events, including 4 PGA Championships and 2 US Opens.

Also advancing to final stage are:
MLGT winners Nick Malinowski, Nathan Smith and Ted Brown,
as well as Chris Wilson, Hugo Leon, Jess Daley, Rick Price, Keven Fortin-Simard and Ken Duke who finished 2nd twice on the MLGT during the 2009 FedEx cup.

Brian Anderson Fires a 5-under par 67 for Fourth MLGT Win!

December 2, 2009

PALM CITY, Fla. – Brian Anderson of Rochester, Ill., fired a five under par 67 Wednesday for his fourth Minor League Golf Tour victory, his second in less than two weeks. After birdies at Nos. 1, 9 and 13, Anderson eagled the par-5 17th hole to take the lead at Hammock Creek Golf Club, hitting a monster drive with the wind at his back. The ball
hit a cart path which crosses the fairway and bounded even farther.

David Smith finished tied for second at 4-under par 68.  He shared that position with Ryan Armour and Randy Leen, who both also shot 68 on Monday at Abacoa resulting in a first place tie that was won by Armour in a playoff.

Frank Dully and David Johnson tied for fifth place at 2-under par 70, followed by 6 players at 1-under par 71.

Anderson was declared co-champion of a MLGT tournament Nov. 19 at Abacoa GC, about 20 miles and four exits on I-95 south in Jupiter when darkness prevented a playoff with Q-School Contest winner Brett Bergeron of LaPlace, Louisiana.

In the playoff, at the par-4 first hole, neither player reached the green in regulation. Leen putted from the fringe but then missed a six footer for par. Armour had been 25 yards short of the green, chipped down to two feet and made the par.

It was Armour’s second MLGT victory, the first coming Nov. 5 at Fountains Country Club near Lake Worth. Leen has three MLGT titles.  Each player had six birdies and two bogeys. Armour earned $910, Leen $625, from the $6,817 purse.

2010 is going to be Groovey....?
The PGA Tour, European Tour, Champions, LPGA and Nationwide Tours are implementing the USGA's new rule for expert players in 2010
Posted November 26, 2009 by Jay Slazinski

It has been the leading after round topic of 2009 and soon, we will all get to see who is right.  Are certain top players (who bomb and gouge) going to free fall down the PGA TOUR money list as David Toms, Tim Clark and Brian Gay move up into the top 10?  Is Tiger (who supposedly has been playing the new grooves during most of 2009) going to separate himself from the pack even more?  Personally, I think that the average scores will go up slightly, players will spend a lot of time evaluating new wedges and softer golf balls, and professional golf tours and club manufacturers will be left to administer the new requirements the USGA has given us.  (see paragraph below)

The revisions to the Rules of Golf, which place new restrictions on golf club grooves, will go into effect starting Jan. 1, 2010.  The regulations control the cross-sectional area of grooves on all clubs, with the exception of drivers and putters, and limit groove edge sharpness on clubs with lofts equal to or greater than 25 degrees, usually a 4 or 5-iron.

So what does all of this mean?

  • The new (currently optional) rule, may be adopted as a condition of the competition starting January 1, 2010, just like in 2006 when the USGA decided to allow distance measuring devices as a condition of the competition.

  • It is recommended that this condition of competition be adopted only for competitions involving the highest level of expert player.

  • By 2014 the USGA and R&A have announced they will implement this condition of competition at expert amateur competitions.

  • At the earliest this condition of competition will become a permanent equipment specification in the Rules of Golf in 2024.

  • All new clubs submitted to USGA for approval after 2009 must conform to the new specifications.

  • Manufacturers can produce existing clubs and exhaust inventory until the end of 2010.

The USGA will adopt the new groove rules as a condition of competition for the 2010 US Open, US Women’s Open and US Senior Open starting with the sectional (final stage) qualifying events for each of the three championships.  The condition of competition regarding grooves will not be in effect at local (first stage) qualifying events in 2010.

How does this effect Minor League and Quest Golf Tour Events?

Our 3 main issues regarding implementation of this expert condition are:

1. Cost and availability of conforming equipment to our members
2. Reduction of field sizes due to lack of conforming equipment if we implement too early
3. Enforcement

Back in October I sent Mike Davis at the USGA an email regarding my concerns in reference to their conforming club database.  I pointed out that the database was essential for implementation of the new groove condition and specifically identified the need for the content to be updated and maintained in such a manner by the USGA that it could be used for compliance and enforcement.  Currently the USGA database is  available only as an online search tool, not in a list format that we would be able to have onsite at check-in or on the first tee.

Based upon the information available at this time The Minor League and Quest Golf Tours will not make a decision to add the groove condition of competition before March 31, 2010.  We will provide players with at least 60 days notice when we decide on the proper time to implement this change.

If you have not already evaluated and devised a plan to make necessary changes to your equipment to make sure it conforms, get on it.  If your plans include Nationwide Tour Monday Qualifiers or PGA Tour Q-School in 2010, make sure your equipment conforms by January 1, 2010 or by the time you tee it up in one of those events.

Waiting List?  It's getting to be that time of year again.....
Helpful hints to facilitate a successful, smooth season for all
November 19, 2009

If you checked the website early on the morning of Tuesday November 16th, you would have seen that 28 players were registered to play in the 2-Day event Wednesday-Thursday at Abacoa.  By noon, we had 51 players registered and started a waiting list, and by 6 pm there were 10 players on that list.

33 players decided to sign up (or at least try to) on the day before the event.
While this works the majority of the time during the summer (when the courses are empty) during the season it does not.

You need to register for an event as soon as you know you want to play in it, because this time of year tee times are valuable and scarce.

Here is a typical scenario:   The MLGT books 15-20 tee times months in advance.
2-3 days before the event---the course checks our registered player list and their tee sheet.  If our signup is light, they will start taking back our tee times and booking them with member or public play.  They do this because we can not guarantee the tee times and be charged for rounds not played, and they need to ensure revenue.  Additionally, they charge more to the public AND those players usually spend more money on food, drinks, and merchandise then we do.  So it is easy to understand why filling tee times with those players is more desirable to the golf course.

Our best way to combat this problem is to sign up early.
If we are full 2-3 days before the event---we may be able to get MORE tee times and have a bigger event.  Otherwise, the longer players wait to register, the greater the chances our field sizes will be reduced!

So, if you know you want to play in a single MLGT event, a single QUEST event or Series, get on the registered player list.  This will help manage and grow the field sizes, resulting in a better tour for the players and stronger relationships with our host courses.

Ryan Armour's 66 Good For a 1 Shot Win in First MLGT Start

Randy Leen & Jimmy Lytle tie for second at 4-under par 67,  Gavin Dear & Rich Hanna shoot 68
November 5, 2009

LAKE WORTH, Fla. – Ryan Armour of Jupiter birdied the last two holes Thursday to earn the victory in his first start on the Minor League Golf Tour.  Armour posted a five under par 66 on the West course at Fountains Country Club to win by one stroke. He also birdied Nos. 2, 7 and 13 and did not make a bogey, earning $900 from the $5,435 purse.  Armour has spent 5 of his ten years as a professional on the PGA and Nationwide Tours.

Nearly as decisive for Armour as the closing birdies was a par at the 210-yard 16th hole which was playing into a stiff wind, according to tournament director Jimmy Jones. That’s because the two players who tied for second at 67 both bogeyed the par-3 16th. Both Jimmy Lytle of Ocean Ridge and Randy Leen of Dayton, Ohio, had five birdies and no
other bogeys.  Both also birdied the par-4 17th and parred the 18th.

Gavin Dear and Rich Hanna tied for fourth at 3-under par 68 followed by a half dozen players who shot 70.  Ten of the 44 players in the field will be teeing it up at 2nd stage of PGA Tour Q-School starting November 18th.
