Lytle-Turpen Battle Goes The Distance AND then some

BEACH GARDENS, Fla. – Jimmy Lytle of Ocean Ridge
birdied the first extra hole Thursday to outlast Tim
Turpen of Fayetteville, Tenn., in the finals of the
Minor League Golf Tour’s second annual match play
championship.
Two down
after 13 holes on the Estate course at PGA National,
Lytle pulled even with a birdie at the 15th
hole after Turpen bogeyed the 14th. They
halved the last three holes with a par-birdie-par
finish.
In the
playoff, both players had birdie opportunities at the
par-4 first hole. Turpen missed from six feet moments
before Lytle made his from about two feet for the
victory. Lytle earned $2,500 from the $13,200 purse.
Turpen received $1,500.
In
regulation, both birdied the first hole, Lytle got the
first lead with par-4 at the fourth, lost the fifth to
Turpen’s eagle, won the sixth with birdie and lost the
ninth when he hit his second shot into the water.
On the
back nine, Turpen won the 10th with par, the
11th with birdie for a 2-up lead, lost the
12th when he hit his tee shot out of bounds,
but won the 13th with birdie to lead again
by two holes before Lytle began his comeback.
It was
Lytle’s fourth career MLGT win, all this year, and
second as a pro. As an amateur, Lytle won on Jan. 8 at
the Florida Club and June 25 at Atlantis Country Club.
He turned pro in July and won again Aug. 5 at the Links
at Madison Green.
There
were 63 qualifying hopefuls for the 32-player match
play draw. David Ladd and Adam Fox were the
co-medalists at five under par 67. Turpen was among
three players who survived a five-man playoff at 73 to
complete the bracket.

PALM BEACH GARDENS –
Jimmy Lytle of Ocean Ridge and Tim Turpen of West Palm Beach
have advanced to the finals of the second annual Minor League
Golf Tour match play championship. Each won two matches
Wednesday and will play for the title Thursday morning on the
Estate course at PGA National. The winner of the $13,200
tournament will receive $2,500, the runner-up $1,500.
Three of the four morning
matches went to extra holes. Matt LeConche needed 21 holes to
take down Victor Leoni and Craig Hicks won his match with
Paul Scalett in 20 holes. Lytle eliminated Ciaran McMonagle
1up after 19 holes and Craig Hicks 3 & 2 in the afternoon
match. Turpen ousted Yohann Benson 2up in the morning and
Matt LeConche 3 & 2 in the afternoon. Both Lytle and Turpen
have three career MLGT titles. All of Lytle’s were earlier
this year. Turpen won twice in 2007, once in 2006.

PALM BEACH GARDENS,
Fla. – Defending champion Justin Peters and Monday’s
co-medalists, David Ladd and Adam Fox, were all eliminated
Tuesday during the first two rounds of the second annual
match play championship staged by the Minor League Golf Tour.
Peters, of Plantation, lost to Yohann Benson of Montreal 2
and 1 after beating Frank Bensel of Greenwich, Conn. 1-up in
the morning round. Peters beat Richard Terga of West Palm
Beach 5 and 3 in the finals a year ago. The tournament has
been played on the Estate course at PGA National each year.
Ladd, of Palm Beach Gardens, beat Clayton Gamber III of Doral
4 and 2, then was edged out by Paul Scaletta of Palm Beach
Gardens 1-up. Fox, of Stuart, lost his first round match to
Dan McCarthy of Syracuse, N.Y. 4 and 3. Result

BEACH GARDENS, Fla. – Sixty-three players attempted to qualify
for The 2008 Match Play Championship on Monday at PGA
National's Estate Course. The top 32 players were determined
in a 18 hole stroke play qualifier.
David Ladd of Palm Beach
Gardens and Adam Fox of Stuart matched five under par 67s to
share medalist honors, Ladd made three birdies on each nine
and bogeyed the par-3 eighth hole. He was awarded the top
seed on a match of cards with Fox, who had five birdies in a
bogey free round.
Twenty-nine
players shot 72 or better and five players who shot 73
played-off for the last 3 spots. Tim Turpen pitched in for
birdie and Dan McCarthy two putted for par on the first playoff
hole to get two of the three spots. Clayton Gamber III, Darren
Husse, and Taylor Stewart all made bogey after failing to get
up and down for par. Clayton Gamber III parred the second and
third playoff holes to outlast Stewart and Husse, who was
eliminated on the second extra hole.
In the first match Tuesday,
Ladd plays Clayton Gamber III of Doral and Fox meets Dan
McCarthy of Syracuse, NY.
The 63 starters in the MLGT s 114th tournament of
the year, included defending champion Justin Peters of
Plantation, who qualified with 69 and plays Frank Bensel of
Greenwich, Conn., in the opening match.
Craig Hicks of Windsor, Ontario, won the only skin with
birdie at the par-4 first hole, earning $330. Two rounds of
matches are scheduled Tuesday and Wednesday and the 18-hole
finals will be played Thursday morning. Result

Due to a large
turnout, The 10,000 Match Play Championship became the $13,200
Match Play Championship. Seeding was determined by score and
to break ties, by scorecard matching. The last three spots
were awarded by the results of the playoff.
