PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. – Stephen Grant of Palm Beach Gardens, playing in the first group off the tee in the first event of the Golfslinger.com Tour’s 10th season, was the winner Monday with a five under par 67 on the Estate course at PGA National.
Grant, 35, a former professional soccer player from Birr, Ireland, made seven birdies and two bogeys to win by a stroke over Brandon Smith of West Palm Beach. Smith finished an hour and a half later with a bogey at the 18th hole for 68. Grant had birdied the par-5 closing hole.
It was Grant’s third Golfslinger title. He received $1,000 from the $4,994 purse. He has played Golfslinger since March, 2008, and has career earnings of $18,795.16.
Smith, 30, was second among 43 starters on five birdies and a bogey, collecting $550. He has won 14 Golfslinger titles, including two before turning pro before the start of the 2010 season.
The event sponsor, B.i.G Bioengineered in Germany, was set up on the driving range for players to see and test their equipment. Additionally B.i.G. had Long Drive and Closest to Pin Contests for the players in the event. Mitchell Gregson hit it 12' 9" on the par-3 8th hole and Greg Etimos hit the longest drive. Both contest winners will receive coupons worth up to $500 to use or give to a referral.
The Golfslinger Tour played 955 tournaments from August, 2004, through December. Two more 18-hole events are scheduled this week: Wednesday, Abacoa GC, Jupiter, and Thursday, Fountains CC, Lake Worth.
