LAKE WORTH, Fla. – Eric Beringer of Philadelphia overcame a double bogey on the second hole with a birdie on the first playoff hole Monday to score his first victory on the Golfslinger.com Tour.
Playing in the last group of the day on the North course at Fountains Country Club, and with a set of borrowed clubs, Beringer caught Matt Ceravolo of Palm Beach Gardens at three under par 68.
Beringer realized on the way to the course that his clubs were still at Old Marsh in Palm Beach Gardens where he had left them over the weekend to be re-gripped as he traveled to his best friends wedding in Brooklyn.
Since he did not have time to get them, he contacted tournament director Jimmy Jones who lent Beringer his irons, wedges and 3-wood. Beringer rounded out the set with a backup putter, Driver and hybred that were still in his car. Coincidentally Jones had the same Blue GOLF PRIDE Multi-Compound Grips that Beringer uses on his clubs. There is an old wedding saying about something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue....
Beringer started out shakey with an early double on the second hole, but started to feel comfortable after making consecutive 12 footers for birdie on holes 6 and 7 to get back to even par. After a bogey on 10, Beringer recovered from a tee shot in the water on the par 5 eleventh hole to save his par. Birdies on 15 and 16 from eight feet, followed by a chip in on 17 had Beringer feeling like he was on fire and he almost drained a 40 foot birdie on the 18th green for the win.
He than sank a four footer at the par-5 first hole for the win and received $750 from the $3,860 purse. This raised his career earnings to $15,586 as an occasional Golfslinger participant since February, 2008. Ceravolo collected $580 with four birdies and a bogey. He first played Golfslinger in December, 2010 and turned pro last summer.
When asked (by about 6 people including me) which clubs he was going to use tomorrow at Abacoa, he said his, but with a different mindset of letting things happen.
Golfslinger’s 28th tournament of the year drew 28 entries. Next on the schedule: Tuesday, Abacoa GC, Jupiter, and Thursday, Jacaranda GC, Plantation.
