PALM CITY, Fla. – Dan McCarthy of Syracuse, NY, playing in the final threesome Thursday, birdied the last two holes to pull out another victory on the Minor League Golf Tour. With three others already in with 68's and preparing for a playoff, McCarthy finished at four under par 67 on the Osprey Creek course at Martin Downs Country Club.
It was McCarthy’s second MLGT win in as many days, his fourth this month and 40th since joining the South Florida mini-tour in October, 2007. He collected $700 from the $3,070 purse, raising his career earnings to $112,413.
McCarthy was even at the turn on a birdie at the fifth hole and a bogey at the sixth, then birdied Nos. 10, 11, 17 and 18. He had a miraculous escape at the par-5 17th, from the front lip of a greenside bunker to about a foot, then sank a 15 footer at the par-4 18th for the win.
Among the three at 68 was Austin Powell of Jupiter, FL, a University of Pennsylvania graduate and winner of the Palm Beach County Amateur Championship in 2012.
The 105th tournament of the year drew 24 starters. Two more 18-hole events are scheduled next week, Monday at West Palm Beach GC and Tuesday at Jacaranda’s East course in Plantation.
