CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. – Jon McLean of nearby Weston, FL overcame 2 bogies with 5 birdies for a 3-under par round of 69 Monday to win for the eighth time on the Minor League Golf Tour.
The son of noted golf instructor Jim McLean, Jon won by a stroke over Ben Silverman of Toronto, Ontario. Along with bogeys at the seventh and 15th holes, McLean birdied Nos. 8, 10, 12, 14 and 16. Silverman made three birdies and one bogey for 70, second among 36 starters.
McLean received $925 from the $4,725 purse, raising his career earnings to $37,825 since January, 2010.
Six players tied for 3rd at 1-under par 71 including Justin Hicks. Hicks is returning from an injury and tuning up for the Honda Classic on the PGA Tour next week.
The MLGT will be off until the weekend when it conducts the professional division of the West Palm Beach City Championship Saturday and Sunday. The winner is guaranteed $3,000 at any number of players and $5,000 at 45 or more. The field is limited to the first 48 players to sign up so sign up early to guarantee a spot. Lunch will be provided to the players both days.
