STUART, Fla. – Daniel Obremski of Pittsburgh, PA sank a 12-foot birdie putt on the second extra hole Thursday at The Champions Club to win for the fifth time on the Minor League Golf Tour.
Obremski, 29, outlasted Jimmy Lytle, 30, of Ocean Ridge, FL after they tied at five under par 67. They halved the first extra hole with par-4's, then Lytle missed the green at the par-3 second, chipped to about eight feet but could only watch as Obremski make birdie for the win.
Bogey-free for 20 holes, Obremski received $875 from the $4,625 purse plus another $200 from an optional bonus pool to raise his career earnings to $18,218 since March, 2012 when he scored his first MLGT win at The Champions Club. In regulation, Lytle, second among 37 starters, eagled the par-5 13th hole and also made four birdies and a bogey. He is the MLGT career leader with $216,858 and 58 wins.
Thursday’s event was a tune-up for one of three Honda Classic pre-qualifiers next week. The open qualifier is scheduled Feb. 20 at Mayacoo Lakes CC, West Palm Beach, and the main event Feb. 23-26 at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens.
A big thank you to Champions Club for hosting this event right before the pre qualifier to give the guys a chance to see the course under tournament conditions.
Three 18-hole MLGT tournaments are scheduled next week: Monday, TPC Eagle Trace, Coral Springs; Tuesday, Abacoa GC, Jupiter; and Thursday, Martin Downs CC, Palm City.
