PALM CITY, Fla. – Steve LeBrun of West Palm Beach, FL, sank a 15-foot birdie putt on the final hole of regulation Wednesday to set up a playoff, then birdied the second extra hole to earn his career record 68th win on the Minor League Golf Tour.
Making just his second start on the MLGT, Tyler Joiner of Leesburg, GA was trying to derail the red hot LeBrun. They tied at five under par 67 at Hammock Creek Golf Club, LeBrun with seven birdies and two bogeys, Joiner on five birdies.
With three 68's already posted, LeBrun and Joiner, in the day’s final threesome, changed everything on the final green at the par-5 ninth. First, LeBrun sank the long birdie putt, then Joiner matched it with a two-footer to send it to a sudden death playoff.
They matched par-4's at the 10th hole (1st playoff hole) but Joiner hit his tee ball at the par-4 11th under a tree, pitch back into the fairway, reached the green in three but missed par from 15 feet. Then LeBrun made an eight-foot putt for birdie and the win.
LeBrun received $650 from the $2,360 purse plus $150 from an optional bonus pool and $33.34 in the skins game for a total of $833.34, raising his MLGT career earnings to $187,833 since September, 2007. He's now won his last 5 starts on the MLGT.
Joiner, second among 19 starters, collected $500. He did not make a check in his first start Tuesday on the Estate course at PGA National after shooting three over par 74.
