JUPITER, Fla. – Veteran campaigner Justin Hicks of Grosse Ile, MI, and Wellington, FL, scored his 44th win on the Minor League Golf Tour with an eight under par 64 Tuesday at Abacoa Golf Club. Hicks, 45, eagled the par-5 10th hole to go with six birdies, three on each side, at Nos. 2, 3, 6, 11, 12 and 17. He did not make a bogey. Hicks won his first MLGT start on March 20, 2005, and has played more frequently since mid-2006, taking time away for a pair of Korn Ferry Tour victories, in 2008 and 2010.
Piri Borja of Coral Springs, FL was second among 28 starters with 65. He birdied the last four holes but bogeys at 11 and 12 proved costly. He collected $550 from the main purse, $150 from the optional bonus pool and $52 in skins for a total of $752.
Hicks received $725 from the $3,500 purse plus $232 from the BP, raising his career earnings to $142,073. He and Matt Holuta are tied for the lead in Monday Qualifier Contest #6 presented by Abacoa Golf Club with one event to go on Thursday at Jupiter CC. The player with the lowest cumulative score for the three 1-day events this week will win a $1k bonus to compete in a Monday Qualifier on the PGA Tour or Korn Ferry Tour. The purpose of the Contest is to send the hot MLGT player on the road to try to play their way up to the next level.
