ATLANTIS, Fla. – Mike Caporale of Fort Myers fired an 11 under par 61 Monday at Atlantis Country Club to earn his first victory on the Fuzion-Minor League Golf Tour, earning $775 from the $4,127 purse.
But he missed by two strokes on a $1,000 bonus in a “59 Challenge.”
The par 72 course was set up at just about 6,000 yards, about 1,000 shorter than the average MLGT event, in hopes someone would shoot 59. There were several driveable par-4s and short par-5s.
Caporale birdied 11 holes but still won by just a shot over A.J. Gerlach of Jupiter, who made 10 birdies for 62 to finish second among 33 starters. Caporale birdied Nos. 1, 2, 4, 6, 7, 10, 11, 12, 14, 16 and 18; Gerlach Nos. 1, 3, 4, 6, 8, 11, 12, 14, 16 and 18.
The event was such a hit among the participants, Atlantis Country Club and the Fuzion Minor League Golf Tour are going to give the players another shot at 59. On Monday, December 13th we will have The '59' Challenge II. So if you did not get to play, OR want another shot at it, here is your chance.
There was $180 in the skins pot with 3 skins out worth $60 each.
