JUPITER, Fla. – Brooks Koepka of Lake Worth overcame an erratic first round Tuesday with a bogey-free second Wednesday to win the Golfslinger.com Tour’s ninth annual Tour Championship and a $10,000 check at Abacoa Golf Club.
A former Cardinal Newman High School golfer and June graduate of Florida State University where he earned multiple all-Atlantic Coast Conference honors, Koepka, 22, shot 70-66—136 to win by a shot.
On Tuesday, Koepka started his round with a triple bogey at the par-5 10th hole, birdied 12, 14 and 15, bogeyed 16 and 17, birdied the first, eagled the second, had a double bogey at the fifth and birdied the seventh. In the final round, he made three birdies and six pars on each nine.
It was just the fourth Golfslinger start for Koepka, who played most of the summer on the European Challenge Tour. He won the Challenge de Catalunya in Spain on Sept. 30, earning $33,835.38. His previous Golfslinger record includes a win Aug. 31 at The Wanderers Club and a tie for second Oct. 10 on the Rees Jones course at Breakers West.
There were 81 starters, including Major III Ben Silverman who birdied 17 and 18 to come up one shot short of a playoff and finish solo second.
First round leader Jon Curran of Jupiter tied for third place with Greg O'Mahony of Tequesta, who won the GOLFslinger Tour Championship here back in 2010, followed by Peter Laws, Collin Neeman and Sunny Kim who tied for 5th at 5-under par.
The Golfslinger’s ninth season ends Thursday with a 27-hole event at the par-3 Jupiter Dunes Golf Club, the 122nd tournament of the year. Play will resume Jan. 7 at PGA National’s Estate course.
There was $400 in the Day 2 skins pot. Four skins were out worth $100 each.
