CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. – Nicholas Thompson of Coral Springs, FL, tuning up for his return to the PGA Tour, fired a five under par 67 Monday to win the Minor League Golf Tour event at the TPC at Eagle Trace, his home course.
Thompson, who turned 33 on Christmas Day, made four birdies in a row starting at the seventh hole. He finished with an eagle, five birdies and two bogies. It was his second MLGT victory, the first coming January 10, 2011 in his first appearance.
Thompson earned $900 from the $4,590 purse and an additional $120 in skins money and $275 from the bonus pool for a total of $1,295.
He missed the cuts in three early-season starts on the PGA Tour last fall but looks forward to a good 2015/2016 season on the PGA Tour.
Jimmy Lytle of Ocean Ridge, FL was second among 35 starters, posting six birdies, two bogeys and a double bogey for 70. Lytle is the MLGT’s all-time money winner with $185,386.32 and shares the career record with 48 victories.
Both of Nicholas Thompson's siblings, Curtis Thompson and Lexi Thompson, got their first professional victories on the Minor League Golf Tour. Lexi's coming back in February 2011 and Curtis' in October 2014. Nicholas now leads the Thompson family with 2 MLGT victories.
