WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Amateur Jorge Garcia, making just his second start on the Minor League Golf Tour, fired a nine under par 63 Friday at the West Palm Beach Golf Club for a three-stroke victory.
A Venezuelan now living in Miami, Garcia, 21, eagled the par-5 12th hole and made birdies at Nos. 1, 3, 10, 11, 15, 16 and 18. He did not make a bogey and received a gift certificate for $700. Garcia tied for second in his only previous MLGT start, on Oct. 22.
Tied for second among 39 starters were Sunny Kim of Queens, NY, with six birdies, and Mark Purrington of Dartmouth, MA, seven birdies and a bogey. Each received $475 from the $4,330 purse.
The MLGT plays three 18-hole tournaments next week: Monday, Evergreen Club, Palm City; Tuesday, Abacoa GC, Jupiter; and Wednesday, Palm Aire, Pompano Beach. For those players competing in all 3 one day events next week, there is an optional $150 cumulative bonus pool. 100% of the entry goes into the purse. 33% and ties of the participating players will be paid.
