PLANTATION, Fla. – Sunny Kim held off a late surge by Lexi Thompson Tuesday to win for the 71st time on the Minor League Golf Tour. He beat the LPGA star by one stroke, 135 to 136.
Thompson birdied the 12th, 13th and 17th holes for a closing 66 in her bid for her second MLGT victory. Kim, of Palm Beach Gardens and Queens, NY, finished bogey-birdie for 68. He had taken a two-stroke lead into the final round at Plantation Preserve Golf Course, opening with 67 on five birdies and a bogey. Thompson was fourth with 70 after the first round.
Kim earned $1,548 from the $6,765 purse, boosting his MLGT record earnings to $286,498.
Thompson is one of two female champions on the MLGT, which began in 2004. Her previous victory was in February, 2011, at Eagle Trace GC. Tuesday, she collected $1,124 for the 2nd place finish.
Lexi heads to Ohio next week for the restart of the LPGA Tour season.
Matt Holuta won $150 in the 2nd day shootout with a score of 66.

Nick Latimer and Luke Graboyes matched 2-under par 69's and will try to chase down Sunny on Tuesday. Female sensation, Lexi Thompson opened with 70 and is in solo 4th. She is trying to keep her game sharp before she heads to Ohio next week for the restart to the LPGA Tour season.
There is an OPTIONAL $50 2nd day shootout for players that are outside the money after day one (73 and higher). If you would like to participate you must sign up and pay online before the first tee time on Tuesday. No exceptions.
