PALM CITY, Fla. – Carl McCauley of Parkland, FL, twice made three consecutive birdies Friday at Martin Downs Country Club to pull out a one-stroke win on the Minor League Golf Tour.
It was the 15th MLGT victory for McCauley, who edged Brant Peaper of Tequesta, FL by a stroke, 64-132 to 65-133, on the Osprey Creek course. Playing one group ahead of McCauley, Peaper had birdied his last four holes. They were tied for second after the first round Thursday.
Ryan Gildersleeve of Clearwater, FL won Q-school Contest #1 in which his entry fee will be paid into the Web.com Tour qualifying school later this year. He won a similar 36-hole tournament here Tuesday and Wednesday and edged McCauley by a stroke over 72 holes, 271 to 272. Each won their 2-day event at 10-under par 132.
In the 4-day Q-School Contest Gildersleeve and McCauley were tied with 2 holes to play. Gildersleeve birdied the par 5 17th hole to pull one shot ahead and then after missing his birdie attempt on #18 from 16 feet McCauley barely missed his 15 foot birdie putt to force a playoff for the Q-school entry fee.
McCauley collected $900 from the $3,800 purse, raising his career earnings to $64,440 since July, 2006. He made five birdies and two bogeys Thursday, birdies at Nos. 6 through 8, 11 through 13 and at the 16th hole the final round.
Eleven of the 20 players chose to enter the optional $200 bonus pool for the 2-day event creating a bonus pool purse of $2,200. 1st place paid $890, 2nd $663, 3rd $437, and 4th $210. Will Coleman won the bonus pool while Matt Springer, Brandon Smith, and Bo Hoag tied for 2nd. The bonus pool pays the top third and is there for players that want to play for more than the original entry fee in the tournament. 100% of the bonus pool entry goes into the bonus pool purse.
The MLGT plays two 18-hole tournaments next week, Tuesday on the Squire course at PGA National and Thursday at the West Palm Beach Municipal GC.
A big thank you goes out to Martin Downs Country Club's staff. They had over 12 inches of rain throughout the week and did a great job getting the golf course ready each day of the event.
The Minor League Golf Tour has Web.com Q-school Contest #2 scheduled for June 20-23 and Web.com Q-school Contest #3 scheduled for July 18-21. One full paid Web.com Q-school entry fee is guaranteed at any number of players. Any number over 25 players will go towards the 2nd place finishers Web.com Q-school entry fee and if 50 players participate 2 full paid Web.com entry fees will be paid. If participation is good we will continue with Contest #4 in August and Contest #5 in September.
PALM CITY, Fla. - Patricio Salem from Lima, Peru, birdied his last hole to card a 4-under par 67 and enter the final round one shot clear of 5 players. Salem went out in 34 and home in 33 on the Osprey Course at Martin Downs Country Club.
Five players are tied for 2nd place just one shot behind Salem after rounds of 3-under par 68 including Carl McCauley, Jamie Sindelar, Charlie Winegardner, Matt Springer, and Brant Peaper.
The 4-day Web.com contest has one day left and Ryan Gildersleeve has a 5 shot lead over 2nd place. Ryan finished the first 36 holes at 10-under par 132 and added an even par 71 in the 3rd round for a 3-day total of 203. Carl McCauley shot 68 in the 3rd round to move to -5 and in 2nd place in the contest.
